Dalelands - Episode 3 'Saving Humble Hill'

The party investigates the hidden lab trying to locate the means to create an antidote for this 'miraculous growth serum'. They then chase down Algar Gaunt and upon capturing him realize there is no chance of redemption. Val finds an interesting new weapon also hidden in the bunker before the party returns to Humble Hill with the cure in hand. Back at the Red Rock Tavern they debrief this mission and take some time to reckon with their emotions.

Thank you all for joining us for episode three of our Dale Lands campaign. Last episode, uh, the party chased down Algargaunt as they found a few of his uh creations. A myconid uh that was once a friendly uncle farmer uh that got turned and was attacking his kin, and then his dog, who uh morphed into a death dog, a two-headed monstrosity that was trapped in his old home. After putting both of them down, uh they found some of uh the farmer's research, uh, as well as a slip of paper that Al Gargaunt had dropped and revealed a bit of information about his plans and about his research. Um it also revealed uh his location near a uh ruined ghost hold, uh a haunted castle, uh, where you tracked and eventually found after a encounter with two Zentrim agents who were also seemingly in search of Algargaunt. Uh you killed them, found some nifty magic weapons, uh, and then uh continued further into the forest to find Algar's hidden shack, uh, which was just a ruse that was discovered to be a kind of cover for an underground stairwell. Uh Ike, as a snake, found it instantly and slithered downstairs to discover a grey ooze, a psychic grey ooze, um that was uh defending this territory. He then uh shot past it deeper into the uh Algar's lab, uh, and eventually finding Algargaunt, doing research, turns around, sees this massive snake behind him. So Ike continued in a hot pursuit of Algargaunt as he ran away. Uh meanwhile, the rest of the party uh followed him uh downstairs, slaying this psychic grey ooze, um eventually joining the chase, but Ike was hampered by closed doors as a snake. Son of a bitch. And Algar managed to get away. Um now we join our party in Algar's lab. Um unless you want to continue this chase uh up this ladder where Algar left. Um pay no mind to the map I have on here that is just a placeholder. I do not care if you chase him or if you explore the laboratory to see what's up. Um he did take a bit, he did take a stack of papers with him as he ran. Um but uh there is plenty down here in this laboratory. Uh if you would like to explore that, rather than giving chase currently. Uh he does have quite a bit of a head start. Um, but the trail will grow colder the longer you take.

Um. Okay. So I'll go over uh just supervising this. I'll go over um in order of how you guys rolled. So starting with uh Hodges Arcana check, looking over the notes, uh, you find uh that in the laboratory uh the tables are crowded with lab notes and equipment. Um and you see uh in the notes, uh he does call this the Miraculous Growth Serum, uh, just like he tried to sell it to uh DD Miracle Grow. Yep. He tried to sell that uh as its name to the farmers, but um he goes into more detail about uh trying to counteract and use the blight of Moander using uh stolen netheries principles. Um you also find uh more mention of this serum-induced life of these mutated plants and the creation of his version of Simulacra.

Uh and he he kind of documents the stages of uh his first experiment, he calls him, which was the farmer that turned into the myconid, uh, as well as his dog. So he details about how he uh was watching him slowly transform from this farmer uh into this fungal beast, um, and how it it took uh two days for the full transformation.

So he was in town kind of watching this sickness uh happen. Um but judging by what you guys have seen, uh it seems like a lot of the townspeople have been uh sick for longer than two days. Um so it might not happen to everyone, or uh or it might have he might have just been documenting the last two days of this man's life. So uh it's hard to tell whether eventually eventually these people will um will turn into the myconid or if they will just uh continue being sick. Uh you Joanna on that medicine check uh find a rack of jars containing synthesized bile and fungal extracts uh taken from uh the villagers and their crop. Uh and you on that medicine check feel uh fairly confident that with the ingredients at hand and with his kind of recipe uh for this uh miracle growth, uh miraculous growth uh serum, uh, that you can kind of reverse engineer it and synthesize a uh reversal for this for a while. Yeah, let's go. Okay. Uh it will take a bit of time, probably a full day of work um to get your first kind of iteration of it. Um but you do feel very confident that you can um crazy cleric.

Uh you read it and it reveals that the Black Black Network uh was monitoring Gaunt's progress and intended to buy the serum as a biological weapon to use against Lord Kirkland Mourn and More. The Morn Rider is going up the ladder as you guys make all these discoveries. Uh you can split that gold 20 gold each if you want to do it evenly. It's up to Val.

Survival checks, you track, uh you find um this way. Uh not only do you find uh the tr the trail of Al Gargaunt, you also see um the footsteps gradually going bigger uh into human-sized footsteps.

Um so just to reiterate uh the renown, uh three plus all citizens of the dale are friendly to you by default. Um five plus merchants in the dale will give you 10% discount on all non-magical wares, uh, and then so forth uh until you get to uh 40 plus, which is the highest. Um you would eventually have a place in the dale's leadership. So that's for the dale renown, which you have one in Daggerdale, uh, and then other uh the seeds of cultivation would be a slightly different uh but very similar uh type of renown. Um as you gain, you would you would gain more missions and respect of the members there and and things like that. Uh so if you want to mark that down, however you want to mark it down, uh because eventually, I'm sure uh as you guys uh come to do some individual missions, you would individually gain renown uh separate from others. Um that is if you eventually split up and and do up things uh away from the group, which uh we've discussed and it could be a possibility. But uh after that, do we return um straight to the inn? Uh can we make it there? I think so. I think we I think we need to think we're due for a bit uh all right. So you all uh wounded and well, I guess you would have tended to most of your wounds on the short rest that you guys took. Uh but uh exhausted after a long day helping a very sick town and uh slaying a very evil man return to Daggerford or Dagger Falls, sorry, um, to Dagger Falls and specifically the Red Rock Inn uh where you are greeted by Kesla and her waitresses Lars Lars Lars Thira and Jandel Gray as they kind of have you uh bring you uh your dinner, uh they recognize um how exhausted and how long of a day you guys have had, and um not much small talk is had as they just kind of bring you your meals and uh thanks for coming back.

I have also seen weapons created with sentience in mind, so you could have been born this way. Uh it will take me it will take me a few days of research but Val, if you would like to attune yourself to this axe you can leave it with me at night and I can study it before I go to sleep. I am I am not on as tight of a schedule as you are, uh of course, until until we find a teleportation portal or a safe way for me to return to Candle Keep, I am sort of at your disposal, so um It is up to you, Val. I I I could spend time attuning to this axe and and learn more quickly. Uh but if the axe would be much more powerful in your hands than mine.
